Scanner is an image capture device, which can convert the image of paper text into a digital format that the computer can display, edit, store and output, such as JPEG, JPG, TIFF, MTIFF, or PDF. Scanners have a wide range of applications, for instance, scanning and combining art graphics and photos into files, scanning and inputting the printed words into the word processing software to avoid re-typing, scanning and inputting fax file into database software or word processing software for storage, and adding images to multimedia.

With the popularity of Internet in office environment, scanner has become an image processing device shared in the network, that is, a network scanner. Early scanners consisted of scanning heads, control circuits and mechanical components. They adopted a line-by-line scanning mode. The digital signals obtained were stored in the form of dot matrix, and then the image signals were edited into standard format text for storage by using file editing software. At present, the scanner is still a kind of computer peripheral equipment, which is only used as an device for capturing and inputting images. The images generated by the scanner must be displayed, edited, stored and output by the computer. The scanner can scan photos, text pages, drawings, art pictures, photographic negatives, photographic films, and even three-dimensional objects such as textiles, sign panels, printed board samples. The scanner obtains their original line, graphics, text, photos, planar objects and other information and converts them into digital formats, which are then converted into editable formats and forms by computers.

In the existing technology, the best portable scanner is only an tool with single function, image capture and output, which can no longer meet the increasingly diverse working environment and operation requirements. Therefore, a new generation of scanners must be developed at present, which can be connected with the Internet to exchange information, scan file information through the transmission of the network to any network equipment or device connected with the Internet, edit, organize, store, back up and print files; in the operating environment of computer network, the scanner is designed to have more independent functions, able to independently complete the operation tasks required by users, and gradually get rid of its functional dependence on external devices such as computers, and is no longer used as peripheral devices and accessory devices of computers. This is an important technical problem that needs to be solved urgently in the scanner field.
